Calculating Control:
(Netz)kunst und Kybernetik

back

Located at the Haus der Statistik in Berlin, the project Calculating Control explores the connections between (net)art and the history of cybernetics, as well as its impact on today's network society. During the 60s and 70s the atmosphere in the German Democratic Republic was strongly affected by technological euphoria, and above all by cybernetic ideas. Not only did the science of control and regulation constitute the foundations for the planned economy, this presumably universal theory manifested itself in architectural forms, artistic expressions and the collective imagination.

The Haus der Statistik was built in this time of cybernetic utopia. Statistical data were collected and processed in the building complex in order to plan the economy. Cybernetic governance based on data reoccurs in contemporary network society in the form of algorithms, AI, Big Data or e-governance. From the very beginning of the medium, net artists have reflected on cybernetic principles of power, control and governance hidden on the Internet.

The project Calculating Control is divided into different formats in order to outline the complex relationships between these historical and contemporary topics. An on-site group exhibition at the Haus der Statistik addresses the connection between socialism and cybernetics while also engaging with concepts of transmission and networking. A symposium opens a room for discussion about different utopias and critiques of cybernetics, today's 'network society' as well as concrete forms of data storing and processing.

An unConference takes on a different angle, encompassing bodily experiences of cybernetics in an experimental mode. The program will also be available online.

During the course of the project the intertwinements of cybernetics, GDR history and netart are further explored in various online essays. The journal extends the narrative base of Calculating Control by providing readings of more disguised stories such as the poetic potentials of statistical visualization, utopian GDR science fiction writing or the history of punch hole cards used in the Haus der Statistik.
